About

“How’s that working out for you? … Being clever.”

For the most part, it has all been said and done before, yet at the same time, we have the potential to add individuality and freshness to old ideas. At the least, honest contemplation rather than rote acceptance feels more compelling to me. As a child, I often asked, “Why?”

As I experiment in using this space as a venue for my obvious reflections, I welcome a dialog that challenges my assumptions and conclusions.

Emily, it’s been delightful reading your blog. Since you’ve invited challenges, I thought I’d pipe up and say that when you write “it has all been said and done before,” I am forced to disagree with you all over the place. I don’t know how these rumors get started, but that particular idea is like an evil email forward that’s been going around since Ecclessiastes (“There is no new thing under the sun.”) Don’t believe it! We don’t live under the sun anyway! The history of our solar system transpires without repetition. No one has ever written these sentences before.

Michael, thanks for the cleverly humorous and worthy challenge! I would agree that using the “There is no new thing under the sun” reasoning as an excuse not to share whatever we can offer to the world would be a mistake.
